Sporting Updates Oct 2019

This Month’s Sporting Updates….

This year we are delighted to welcome Rebecca a qualified Dance teacher to come in and creatively teach two classes each term from Years 1-6. This half term, Year 6 have really enjoyed their dance lessons this term. Linking with the geography curriculum, they have been able to use both traditional and contemporary dance moves to express the effects of climate change on the lives of people around the world.

Year 4 have been exploring different ways to move their bodies both in the air and on the floor. They have especially enjoyed the street dance session, learning the helicopter move! Both year groups are very much looking forward to showcasing their skills in a Celebration assembly in the near future.

Ashlyns Cross Country

Well done to our Year 5 & 6 pupils who competed in a 2 km cross country run at Ashlyns School. Several schools in the area took part in girls, boys and non-competitive races. Congratulations to Will in Year 6 and Ryan in Year 5 who came 7th and 6th in the boys races and Alexa in Year 5 who came 13th out of a field of over 40 competitors in each race.

Skip 2bfit

As you know, every child has a skipping rope in school and takes part in Skip 2bfit, a 2 minute challenge to beat their own score and to try to be the Top Banana in their class.  We have some new skipping ropes, which can be purchased from the office if you or your child would like to practise at home. Skipping is a great way to improve your overall fitness by increasing your heart rate over a short period of time; it also improves balance, agility and coordination. The skipping ropes are priced at £6.00 each.

Swimming

If your child is in Year 5 & 6 and would like to improve their swimming skills Everyone Active at Berkhamsted is running crash swimming courses over half term. Please contact them directly for more information.

Football

The Year 5 & 6 boys and girls football fixtures start this week.

The Year 5 Girls Team had a thrilling start to their tournament, drawing 3-3.  Well done girls!

The Year 6 boys Cup Team came away with a win from their first fixture, as the other team had to forfeit the match.  Well done boys for showing resilience and using the time for more practice.

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist at the games, making the fixtures possible.

Urban Strides Dance visit Westfield

We were lucky enough to have Christina from Urban Strides in last week to deliver an inspirational assembly to our Key stage 2 children all about taking positive action and saying to themselves “Let’s Go!” in achieving their dreams. She instilled a belief in them that no matter what path they choose to take, they can achieve it, as long as they take that first step in the right direction.

Urban Strides are the UK leaders in street dance education, have been seen on 36 TV channels, performed on over 300 arena stages, were the first ever street dance crew to open the Royal Variety show for her majesty, the Queen and their dancers have performed with Sean Paul, Dizzee Rascal, Clean Bandit and that’s only a few.

In addition to performance crews, they have classes for all ages and abilities and the class for your child’s age group is: Mondays 5-6pm at Ashlyn’s School.

Your child was given a leaflet with all the relevant information. However, we only have a limited number of spaces available so, to ensure you get a space, you can BOOK HERE.

You can also check out a video of some of their classes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usgs-4EiSZA or follow us on social media at @urbanstrides to stay up to date with what’s going on.

Congratulations to all of the children who applied for a Sports Leader role this year, we were very impressed with their applications.

We look forward to presenting the children with their Sports leader t-shirts when they arrive and for them to work closely with their teachers in PE sessions and Mrs Ayles our PE co-ordinator in further promoting a healthy lifestyle and sport at Westfield
