Intent
What skill and knowledge do we intend our children to gain?
At Westfield Primary School, we are committed to nurturing our children’s curiosity and understanding of the world, both within and beyond the classroom. Our foreign languages curriculum is broad, vibrant, and ambitious, designed to inspire and engage pupils through a diverse range of topics and themes. The scheme provides diverse, culturally representative lessons to suit different learning needs and styles, offering differentiated resources to meet the needs of all children. Creating a supportive environment encourages participation and ensures every child feels valued resulting in learners feeling confident and included.
We focus on developing the four essential language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while introducing age-appropriate grammar. This approach equips pupils to confidently apply their language skills in various contexts and builds a strong foundation for future language learning.
Our goal is for every child to develop a genuine interest in and enthusiasm for learning foreign languages. We aim to make language learning a stimulating and enjoyable experience that also encourages pupils to reflect on the connections between language and identity. Through this, they gain a deeper appreciation of different cultures and a stronger awareness of themselves, others, and cultural diversity. Ultimately, we strive to foster lifelong language learners.
Implementation
How has the curriculum been developed, how is it taught and how is it assessed in order to support our children to build their knowledge and apply that knowledge as skills?
At Westfield, we follow the Language Angels scheme, which provides a carefully structured progression of lessons and activities to support pupils’ language development. The scheme is designed to give children ample opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French, building their confidence and fluency over time. French is our primary foreign language and is delivered by the classroom teacher.
The curriculum focuses on practical and meaningful language units that will benefit pupils in the future. Regular assessments are used to track progress across all four key
skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—ensuring that each child’s development is effectively monitored and supported.
Impact
What outcomes will or have our children achieved as a result of the curriculum they have received?
As pupils progress through the primary phase, they will continually build on their prior knowledge of the foreign language. Previously learned vocabulary and structures will be regularly revisited, revised, and reinforced where appropriate to support long-term retention.
At the end of each six-week teaching unit, pupil progress in the four key language skills—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—will be assessed in line with the 12 attainment targets from the DfE Languages Programme of Study for Key Stage 2. This assessment data will be recorded and monitored by the Foreign Language Subject Leader, who will use it to ensure teaching remains targeted, effective, and appropriate for individual pupils and classes, as well as to report progress to the Senior Leadership Team.
Teachers have access to a Tracking and Progression Tool, enabling them to easily record, analyse, and review progress at the school, class, and individual levels. Pupils will also use self-assessment grids to reflect on their own learning and maintain a personal record of their progress. At Westfield, we actively seek pupil voice to gather feedback and evaluate understanding and engagement.
