Intent
At Westfield, our PSHE curriculum is designed to help every child grow into a healthy, confident, and resilient individual, equipped with the
knowledge and skills they need to thrive both now and in the future. We use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, a comprehensive and mindful approach
that brings together Personal, Social, Health and Economic education, emotional literacy, social skills, and spiritual development in a cohesive
and engaging way.
Our intent is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children feel valued and heard, and where they can explore topics such as
relationships, mental health, physical wellbeing, diversity, and personal responsibility. Through the Jigsaw scheme, we aim to build self-esteem,
encourage empathy, and promote respect for others, preparing pupils to make informed decisions and become thoughtful, responsible citizens.
We intend for all children to:
-
Develop a strong sense of identity and self-worth
-
Understand how to stay safe and healthy, both physically and emotionally
-
Build positive relationships and communicate effectively
-
Appreciate and celebrate differences in others and in the wider world
-
Recognise and manage their emotions with confidence and maturity
-
Be prepared for the challenges and opportunities of modern life
By embedding the Jigsaw programme across the whole school community, we ensure that PSHE is not only taught explicitly but also reflected in
our school values, assemblies, behaviour policies, and daily interactions
Implementation
We follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides a carefully sequenced, whole-school approach from Reception to Year 6.
-
PSHE is taught weekly, with additional time allocated for circle time, assemblies, and special events.
-
Lessons are structured around six core themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me.
-
RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) is integrated within this, in line with the statutory guidance.
-
Teachers use a range of engaging strategies including stories, role-play, discussion, art, and real-life scenarios.
-
Assemblies and themed days (e.g. Anti-Bullying Week, Internet Safety Day) enhance core messages.
Impact
We assess impact through:
-
Ongoing discussion, reflection, and self-assessment during lessons.
-
Pupil voice surveys and learning walks.
-
Monitoring of class floor books, journals or portfolios where used.
-
Feedback from parents, staff and safeguarding teams.
-
Behaviour logs, wellbeing indicators, and attendance trends.
Pupils leave our school with:
-
A clear understanding of how to stay safe and healthy, both physically and mentally.
-
A respect for themselves and others.
-
The ability to express their feelings and ask for help.
-
A secure foundation for growing into resilient, kind, and thoughtful citizens.
