PE

Intent

At Westfield Primary School, our intent is to deliver a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that enables all pupils to develop physical competence, confidence and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. We use the Complete PE curriculum to ensure a consistent, progressive and inclusive approach to PE teaching across the school.
Through Complete PE, we aim to:
  • Develop pupils’ fundamental movement skills and sport-specific techniques
  • Build physical literacy, confidence and resilience
  • Promote teamwork, leadership and positive sporting values
  • Encourage healthy, active lifestyles and positive wellbeing
  • Ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can access and succeed in PE
Our curriculum is designed to expose pupils to a wide range of physical activities, enabling them to discover their strengths and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.
 
Implementation 
PE at Westfield Primary School is delivered using the Complete PE scheme of work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and provides clear progression of skills from Early Years through to Year 6.
Key features of implementation include:
  • Two PE lessons per week for all pupils, planned using Complete PE units

  • A broad and balanced curriculum including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Clear progression in skills, knowledge and vocabulary supported by Complete PE lesson plans and assessment tools
  • Teachers and specialist coaches using Complete PE resources to ensure consistency and high-quality delivery
  • Inclusive lesson adaptations and differentiation provided through Complete PE guidance to support all learners, including SEND pupils
  • Ongoing assessment using Complete PE assessment criteria to track progress and inform planning
  • Opportunities for competitive sport and physical activity through school sport events, supported by PE and Sport Premium funding
Staff receive ongoing professional development to confidently deliver the Complete PE curriculum and adapt lessons to meet pupils’ needs.
 
Impact
The impact of implementing the Complete PE curriculum at Westfield Primary School is evident in pupils’ engagement, progress and enjoyment of PE.
As a result:
  • Pupils demonstrate secure progression in physical skills and increased physical literacy
  • Children show greater confidence, motivation and resilience in PE lessons
  • Pupils understand and apply key sporting values such as teamwork, respect and fair play
  • Participation in physical activity and school sport has increased
  • Pupils are able to articulate their learning using appropriate PE vocabulary
  • Pupils are well prepared for continued participation in physical activity and sport beyond primary school
